Sometimes it's fun to throw maps and routes to the wind and
go with nothing but curiosity to discover for oneself. This is
what thewrightline calls rambling.
Rambling is a state of mind in which getting lost becomes meaningless.
In the words of that fine old fireside song 'I'm a Rambler':
Can't get lost 'cos
I got no place to go-o-o--ho.
I'm a rambler.
I ramble on and on and on and on
'Cos I'm a rambler.
I'll rammmmmble 'til I'm gone.
The rules of
rambling are as wise and ancient as they are simple and obvious. There's no need
to read them before setting off on a ramble. Rambling rules are as relaxed
as ramblers. If they weren't, nobody would pay them any mind.
Pieces of Eight (PoE) pose a question - is it possible to find purpose
in walking around in circles?
Previously, many people set off to walk a section of the South West Coastal Path
only to reach a point where they had to turn around and walk it all again.
(!) - It was the only way to get back to the beginning.
PoE solves all that by wandering around in circles. Each eight consists of two
circular walks. The start point is -with one exception - in the middle of a figure
of eight.
So if half way through loop a you wish you hadn't worn as many
layers of clothing, you can strip off the excess and deposit it in your car before
starting loop b. Leave that home made picnic in the boot and enjoy an alfresco
lunch after clocking up a few miles of coast path.
