Stannon Down lies between St. Breward and Roughtor. Its stone circle
embraces an acre or so of rubbery moorland turf.
Stand in the middle of it and history rises from the ground like a spring.
To
the west lies traces of a Bronze Age village. There is an ancient graveyard to
the east. And so the three elements of community life - somewhere to live, somewhere
to meet, a place to die - gather within easy walking distance of each other. They
were built 3,000 years ago. You can touch them today.
This is antidote to the pace and stress of 21st century life. The peace and the
threat of the moor seep here into modern humans. It humbles us and inspires
reflective thought.
