Rambling wells
Most of England succumbed to Christianity with the Roman invasion in about 50 ad. When the sixth century arrived most of Cornwall remained pagan. Many Irish and Welsh saints crossed Cornwall on their travels and no small number of them made a home on this thin leg of granite.
There are numerous stories of these holy hermits thrusting a staff into slate or granite from which water flowed forevermore. This piercing of the land gave rise to Holy Wells.
And water continues to flow from Holy Wells.
A fine day's rambling can be enjoyed going in search of Holy Wells. It's probably a good idea to ponder over a map before embarking on such a ramble. It would be pointless to go looking for a Holy Well in an area devoid of them. And there's no merit in getting lost before leaving home.
