Perranzabuloe is the area around Perranporth where, according to legend,
St. Piran arrived in Cornwall after crossing from Irelanad on a millstone.
The area is a series of sand dunes held loosely in place by Marram grass. St.
Piran's oratory or chapel lies buried beneath one of the dunes.
This is fine rambling territory with ample opportunity to get lost even with
a map.
St Piran is said to have accidently designed his flag - a white cross on black
background - while cooking lunch one day. He fell asleep and his lunch burnt to a
cinder. The black slate hob he'd been using exuded white tin ore over its surface
in the shape of a cross.
