Before hitting the streets of Newquay, PoE19a follows the coastal path seaward of the Atlantic Hotel. There it passes the huer's hut, once the nerve centre of the town's pilchard fishing industry. A few steps further along, the harbour can be viewed from above.
Then the hustle and bustle of Newquay envelops the route. Bank Street is pedestrianised. Here cash can be withdraawn before it is spent. There is huge choice of what to spend it on.
Follow the tram tracks to East Street and head for Barrowfields, reputedly haunted by the horses of long dead Celtic Chieftans.
From Porth the route finds its way to Trenance Leisure Park and the site of Newquay Zoo. Enter Trenance Park beyond the high Victorian viaduct. The lake in the park was dug in the 1930s depression by unemployed local men. It became an important community facility.
The route meanders back to Towan via a housing estate, Newquay bus station and a golf course.
Huer's hut
Harbour
The building now described as the huer's hut is thought to date back to the 14th century, when it was perhaps used as a hemitage.
While used by a huer, the hut it was an important part of Newquay's pilchard fishing industry. The huer was entrusted to look out for shoals of pilchard as they passed the bay. On seeing such a shoal the huer blew a horn to alert the town. This triggered the launching of small rowing boats. Guided by the hand signals of the huer, these boats encircled the fish and cast their nets.
At the huer's final signal the sailors would row their boats to shore dragging the shoal, which became trapped between net and land, with them. The fish were then picked from the shore by townsfolk and packed in salt lined barrels by townsfolk for export.
