The cliff path descends ruggedly from Trenance Point to Mawgan Porth - a fine sandy cove. Cafes and a pub offer shore side refreshments in the friendly town.
Inland through a caravan park and a scattering of trees before rising past an erstwhile quarry and finding a long stretch of tarmac.
The route passes a military base at St. Eval, where sheep mix with an unlikely crop of aerials. Dark and strangely ominous on the horizon can be seen the tower of the local church, which honours the RAF. During ww2, St. Eval was a military airfield. The tower was rebuilt in 1724-7 at the expense of Bristol merchants. Apparently it served as a landmark for their ships.
The route continues - largely on tarmac - through farmland and rejoins the return leg of PoE 18a at Bedruthan.
I find this loop a sobering one. Perhaps it is the ghosts of the airmen or the stillness of the remaining base ... but the route always provides food for thought.
