The Portquin to Polzeath road heaves and twists upwards past Doyden House. A kestrel might be perched on a fence post. Tantalising glimpses of the coast compete for attention with the mooing of cows.

Turn right and tumble past dwellings and gorse bushes to Epphaven - an idyllic cove on the remote coast.

The climb to Trevan Point is steep and brief. Its summit is knobbly and reassuring. From here it is a short stroll back to Portquin. The journey may take some time as there are distractions:

Slate slabs stuck vertically into the ground making mini stone circles protect the unwary from falling down a mine shaft; Doyden Castle - a folly perched on a cliff top; the view from Doyden Point...

This short loop is invigorating and packed with interesting features. Basking sharks occasionally visit the bay and a squadron of crazy mallards seem to live nearby. They take great delight in patrolling the valley like ww2 Spitfires.
