The Trevillit River runs along the floor of Rocky Valley, lending this eight a reminder of the role of water in our lives. In the 6th century a holy man who became Saint Nectan settled on the banks of the Trevillet. A cottage called The Hermitage marks the site of Nectan's dwelling. In the 21st century The Hermitage is not only a delightful tea room. It also guards the entrance to St. Nectan's Glen, perhaps the most peaceful spot in Cornwall.

PoE9 stretches east to Boscastle and to Bossiney in the west. Boscastle is approached via St. Nectan's Glen and farmland with fine views on the final approach. The western loop is short and vigorous with much to explore at the mouth of Rocky Valley.

This eight bursts with beauty, with history and stillness. It is an eight for all seasons* and all weathers, a wonderful way to observe the impact of cyclic time on nature.

If you listen carefully, you might hear the bell of St. Nectan** toll to warn sailors of bad weather.
